Закінчення s / es
Більшість дієслів утворює форму часу Present Simple для третьої особи однини (He, She, It) завдяки додаванню закінчення -s. При цьому дієслова не змінюють свого значення.
· to work → works
· to show → shows
· to cook → cooks
До дієслів, що закінчуються на букви або буквосполучення -ss, -x, -z, -ch, -sh, додається закінчення -es.
· to kiss → kisses · to touch → touches · to mix → mixes · to watch → watches |
У дієслів з кінцевою -у, якій передує приголосна буква, кінцева -y змінюється на закінчення -ies.
· to dry → dries
· to worry → worries
· to fly → flies
· to carry → carries
· to imply → implies
· to marry → marries
Якщо ж в дієслові перед кінцевою -y стоїть голосний, то до дієслова додається тільки закінчення -s.
· to play → plays
· to lay → lays
· to stay → stays
· to obey → obeys
Дієслова, що закінчуються на голосну -o, завжди приєднують до себе закінчення -es.
· to do → does · to go → goes · to veto → vetoes |
Винятки
Особливості дієслів
Не за правилами змінюються дієслова to have та to be для третьої особи однини.
· to be → is
· to have → has
Також модальні дієслова Can, Must, Should, May ніколи не змінюють своєї форми в залежності від особи.
· I can → he can
· I must → he must
· I may → he may
· I should → he should
